Section 80D allows a deduction for medical expenses like medical insurance premium, expenditure and preventive health checkup.
Individuals and HUFs can claim these medical expenditures u/s 80D. The deduction limit for health checkup is INR 5,000. However, the limit for medical insurance premium varies based on those covered under it.

Steps to enter 80D deductions
- Navigate to Tax Breaks > 80D
- For Self and Family: You can claim Medical Expenditure only if you are a senior citizen (this is determined by the Date of Birth entered). Otherwise the input of medical expenditure wont be available for you if are not a senior citizen.
- For Parents: You can claim Medical Expenditure for parents only who are senior citizens (above 60). To do the same, you need to click on the tick box of Senior Citizen (to get amount eligible for medical expenditure). Otherwise the input of medical expenditure wont be available for you if parents are not senior citizens.
